Both paths and cross-references outline topics as they appear in different parts of the site. Also, they summarize important links that are found buried deep within pages. A cross reference is a subject matter type, a concept, such as EIE. It might cut across a path. A path is a distributed subsection, such as OMlulu or QTVR, that can't fit under a single directory. It might contain items that are also cross-referenced. This distinction is tricky. Most cross references are not as diverse as paths. That is, they focus on an idea. But the path is a larger thing.
