Resizing a movie
A half-size movie appears to be half the size of the original. The dimensions (width and height) are half, but the file size is unaffected, it is the same as the original. Resizing is easy to do in the QuickTime Player. That is, if you have QT 4. For QT 3, use the Movie Player. I am a QuickTime Pro user, so I'm not sure if that is required for resizing. QT Pro is great shareware for $30, available at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/.
Here's how:
- Open the movie in a separate window.
- In the new window, to pop up the QuickTime options menu on the movie, click and hold the triangle in the lower right corner. Or click and hold anywhere in the movie. Choose "Save as QuickTime movie" or "Save as source". If you do not have a "Save as" menu choice, you can pick it from the browser File menu.
- Choose the directory and name the file as you wish. Keep the file extension .mov.
- On the desktop, find the icon of the movie you saved.
- Double-click the icon. The player opens with the movie.
- From the Movie menu, pick "Half Size". Or resize the movie with the "grow" box in the lower right corner. Experiment to create just the size you want.
- From the File menu, pick "Save as ...". Choose "Make movie self-contained" and give the movie a new name.
- Open the new movie to verify the changed dimensions. You can change them anytime.
There are many other options in the player. Enjoy!
