It is an event on the web. It is the first publication of lostNfound. It is one map to the models of expansion of consciousness. Specifically, it is a panorama of the model of EIE. The QTVR is at the bottom of the page, so you can read while it downloads (236K). There is also a non-QTVR detailed look at the scene.

Nature: the wild volunteers -- Oxalis, succulent, and orchid

It is 11 AM on March 20-21, 1998. This is the local PST wave time of the Wrinkle 2 tsunami sweeping around the earth. Ride the wave as it washes around and into a walk-in form (dodecahedron) made of plastic hula hoops.

As we sit on the meditation cushion within, see what we see from each opening. We are the wild plant volunteers, honored today for the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.

In 55 minutes, it will be the equinox. We quiver in anticipation of the balance point between equal night and day. Through our roots, we will sense vibrations of the peace bell tolling from the UN building in NYC for Earth Day.

I call our friends here a "still life" as in "there is still life". I live in the city and was unable to travel today but I found an encouraging sign for Earth Day. It's been 15 years since I moved from the country. The plants I brought have all died. But the native California plants volunteered here. I don't water the containers. All summer they are dry and dead, no plant life. Yet when winter rains come, plants spring up.

The redwood sorrel, Oxalis, that usually grows in redwood forests, is suviving on my deck in Silicon Valley. The Western Garden book says that all types of sorrel can be grown in containers except this kind. My volunteers are the exception.

I don't know the origin of the fat succulents or the filigree weed with tiny orchids either.

This pano is an entry to lostNfound, the space, the sculptures, the ideas they spring from and explore. The theme is expansion of consciousness. The forms are either ritual objects to aid expansion or models of visions of expanding consciousness. Hotspots in the pano link to ever greater detail and deeper levels of information. In April, 1998, there's a start.

Technical notes

Here are the tools and approach. The file size is 236K.

Tools

• Camera and panhead used: Nikon One Touch, handheld.
• Type of film : Fujifilm 200 ASA
• Print scanner: UMAX 6E, 150 dpi, saved as TIFF files
• Macintosh PPC software:
  • QuickStitch Needed a stitcher and not yet able to afford QTVRAS. QuickStitch is an order of magnitude cheaper. QuickStitch takes BMP or JPEG files. I'm not familiar with BMP so I saved my TIFF files as .jpg with highest quality (10) at 72 dpi. The stitching worked but the output files are fuzzy, details are lost. I stitched 3 or 4 prints together, overlapping sections.
  • Photoshop 4.1 Assembled stitched sections and saved as a PICT
  • Make QTVR panorama 1.0b4
    Used this version (rather than 2) to ensure backward compatibility
    Cinepak compression at 75%
    Default zoom: 80

Approach

I'm relatively new to QTVR panoramas. From what I've seen, often the photographer rotates the camera 360 degrees around a stationary point. The effect is something like a fish eye lens. For this pano, I rotated the camera about 45 degrees from each of 12 separate points. Each point was in the center of a hula hoop looking through the middle of the dodecahedron to the opposite face. That is the center of the plane of a face of the dodecahedron. The effect is composite, more like a fly eye. In the pano, I spread out the points of view in a wave. The idea is to simulate the way you would look around at different points.
