Rio Theatre mural

In 1973, my first trip to Monte Rio, CA, was to work on the Rio Theatre. A doctor had bought the building, envisioning it as a community center, and gathered people to work on it. Soon in nearby Forestville I became so involved with Wholeo the stained glass dome project, that I lost track of the Rio. The dream of the center did not come true. By the time I moved to a house in Monte Rio in 1975, the Rio stood abandoned. Notice the sign over the road to the left, "Monte Rio Awaits Your Return".

This picture shows the mural, called "The Yellow Submarine" by Wilfred DePaola. New owners painted over it in a dull flat color. However, kids saw all the old movie classics in 50-cent matinees.
