30A Deer Lake SW 3

On January 2, 2011, the grassy area between Scenic Highway 30-A and the bike path west of Deer Lake had many promising bulges of small earth balls along with crumpled fragments, but no good or interesting specimens. The find of the day was the 10 cm. earthball on the bank south of the bike path below the rich growth of deer lichen in the forest edge, which is beyond the reach of the grass mower. The rainwater in the spore cavity (peridium) reflects the stormy grey sky like a leaden mirror. Little change on January 9, 16, 23, and 30. This earthball persisted through March and was gone in April.

I've been following deer lichen about 20 feet west on this bank, where I've seen small earthstars and ground cover type lichens, but this is the first earthball. See previous pages 0, 1, 2, and Puffball Watch, 2010-2011.
