I really wanted to get into the depth of electronics. But here I am back totally fired up with the idea of how I'm going to do my zen book. It will be a write your own book. The innovation will be in allowing them to write the book. I will take a survey for starters. It should have a lot of analog, sliding scales for the inputter that will translate to digital decisions. I guess hypercard will be the theatre. We will create a show. The show can either be theatre, video, art, book, computer program. Could it be music? It will be open-ended. User can add things in and will be givien tools to do so. New idea for the book: make it interactive to the extent that there are coupons for free development to the program for readers. These developments will become part of new editions that will be available to readers as upgrades. There may be a bulletin board and other on-line services.Ask, "Who are you?" Allow person to create a 3D matrix of qualities they think are most important. Palettes of possibilities or menus or individual entry of items. Use this to pinpoint relationship to ideas in the book. The matrix could have more than 3 dimensions, arrays, so as to specify but not represent graphically. The purpose is to help the reader right to the point of interest. But this would demand smarts and AI of ...quite a bit
Features I'd like from HyperCard: print through super laser spooler (it won't). Be able to paint a button sensitivity area so it could be very irregular and go around things. Also: how get page number to print on c=each card? I have tried the directions in HyperCard Script Language Guide with no success. Be able to print and have scrollable box print each screen scrollful.
Working on z/0. So what is it that makes an index entry in this book?Note, since home stack is highest in hierarchy, would we have some way to install book on Home stack card? What I want to do is to have a go back from stack script. So when go to index or help, can thumb cards and then return to where they came from?
Also, remember my decision to put math book notes and my notes from the class together. This was prompted by the fact that sometimes the quotes need explanations, they just aren't clear apart from the page, or out of context. However, I might be able to deal with that with the pop-ups. Idea: make it a circle star for comments, so it doesn't mix with regular asterisk used for multiplication symbol. It would be nice to have pure references for people, without all the extras. think aabout the trade-offs here. it probably will become clearer when working with notes. it seems like the notes will be so repetive and would abe more meaningful along with the book quotes.... hmmm. may do a right and left page deal. book notes clearly separated from class notes and comments. notes from HyperCard Stack Design Guidelines: parts of stacks are called sections. overhead for stack: 8kfind: searches stack
report: searches one background what is the basic metaphor of my stack? the computer enviroment? desktop publishing? i want it sort of multi-media so it can grow with videos. remember message box, don't put key stuff under it, if they are typing in searches. there is a script to place mb. "show message box at 20,300 is the standard place." i need to lock text when there are transparent buttons in fields. also.. to do: all field fonts must be standard ones that come with hyperCard disks, or include them and have them load. chicago 12, courier 10,12
geneva 9, 10,m 12, 14, 18
Helvetica 10 12
Monaco 9
New York, 9, 10, 12,14,18
Times 10, 12, 18(18 is in hype, not system file)
laserwriter : helv. times, palatino
if want graphics or buttons in pop-up field, create illusion of it by going to the next card, which is so similar. ask
answer
create a storyboard with 1/4 page prints
think about the ability of hc to be easily translated into other languages.
Make mine that way.
what does convert command do?
HyperCard: how show scrolled text when print out the book? I want to keep the goal of up to date print-outs as back up to my material, so all effort that I put directly into the computer, rather than my journal, is recorded.
Evening--late at work, playing with hypercard. Bit-mapped zapf dingbats are awful. Prints ok in a field. When same number pasted to card, seems like text defined separately for card and field, and still the same problem.
Stayed late working on z/0 and the zapf dingbats fonts. I guess I'll have to use them as fields for number quality. That will work. What the heck. Actually a grey bubble over them might work too. I showed Dave DelFava my stacks and got so carried away that I forgot to notice his reaction. Need to find someone to try it out.
I'm thinking about making the /0 hyperbook in facing pages of four cards, two cards to a page. So and and two go together. The last two go together. And in between, it's groups of four.
Hypercard: how get superscripts in fields??
Now journal would be best done in fields that left holes for graphics right there when the idea is. That would be best for the book too. Then any buttons would relate to the rest of the book. When I set it up in scrolling fields, I guess I was assuming people really wouldn't care, they were archiving. Well, I may leave it.
Hypercard: can I get a button script to show me a scrolling field at the point I want?I have been having fantasies about making my computer the Amiga. Then I could develope the black and white book in Hypercard and it can be a hype book. But I can go on from there in Video. That's really what I want to do. Color and movement.
z/0 and HyperCard: rules of procedure of developing thesis: Have to list all characteristics of problems in /0...how state this succinctly? Charge in dealing with exploration:
For graphic details, see the last graphic in the journal.
- explore right, mathematics..Every disclaimer found in references must be met.
- explore for the sake of exploration, Caroling's journal. On the contrary, journal entries are fumbling attempts to trace mystic guidance and are full of flaws. Use only when inspirational and tested for coherence with everything else.
- explore left, zen, every disclaimer can be used for inspiration...but are there requirements?
- Fuller, unique...how is to be used. Can we fashion a notation consistent with his theories as well? Perhaps a list can be compiled of all sources, and from this list the result will be obvious?
Now i had some information in the shower. The book needs humor. concentrate on this. Start a distribution, advertising list. The printed book needs a different format...possibly do this concurrently. But i feel the HyperBook is the leading edge and the printed book is the spinoff. Also a shorter version called "How To Divide By Zero". Instead of printing scrolls, just update mini-writer files on these things:1. notes (pop-up fields)
2. scrolling boxes
3. cross-references? (some)
TODO: Figure out all the reasons for * in the journal and answer them. In Math Book notes a * is to be clicked. In fact, on the features page it says to click on * for more information. I also use * for multiplication sign. My only answer is to put notes for every star in parenthesis. Also today I want to integrate all explore stacks into one stack so can do finds and searches in preparation for integration. I need to finish Fuller. The only problem will be that, like the base of a pyramid, Explore may grow as this book extends over the years and I find more and better quality supporting material. Maybe HyperCard itself will grow to cover this problem in that time.
