Damage from Tropical Storm Arlene, June 2005

Beach between Deer Lake and Camp Creek Lake

In June, 2005, tropical storm Arlene (from the Gulf of Mexico) added insult to the injury caused by hurricane Ivan in September, 2004. As with Ivan, the storm center made landfall about 75 miles west of this beach. I was indoors and didn't realize the impact of the storm surge. Waves eroded the white sands and deposited debris up to 50 feet inland.

Some of the sea oats grasses planted after Ivan cling to the edge, but many have been swept away.

This photo shows what is left of a dune walkover from WaterSound. This development is between Camp Creek lake and Deer Lake in NW Florida. See other pages about this area or the Florida travel page.
