{Back to top of page}Grubbing is cutting plant roots out below the surface of the trail corridor. This video shows how to work together to remove a multi-stemmed yaupon with a deep root system from the treadway of a new trail section. Points covered:
This work was part of the FTA 331 Trail Expansion. Audio is chainsaw at -12db and jazz at -8 db mix. This video is non-commercial and for educational purposes.
- - Yaupon roots must be grubbed from the Florida Trail corridor. If simply cut off, it sprouts.
- - Cut the stems waist high to hold and grab during grubbing.
- - Use a mattock or pulaski axe to chop the roots out underground.
- - Others stay at least 10 feet away from the axe, the area called "The Circle of Death".
- - Dispose of the cutting out of sight with the root end away from the trail.
- - Fill in the hole to prevent a tripping hazard.
