Cypress Creek Bridge, CRS section of Florida National Scenic Trail

Florida Trail: CRS Cypress Creek Bridge

The Choctawhatchee River Section (CRS) of the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST) has a "choke point" called Cypress Creek. Usually wet and muddy and often flooded, in 2016 it has a boardwalk bridge for crossing. Florida Trail Association (FTA) volunteers planned it for eight years and built it with the forestry crew. Ian Barlow, a Forest Service contractor, led the crew and the USDA-FS provided the funding for materials. Here are some video clips.

Cypress Creek 2010-11-23

Trail hog work day on the proposed Choctawhatchee River Section of the Florida Trail, November 23, 2010. Nokuse Plantation has donated a corridor of land. Florida Trail Association (FTA) volunteers have bushwhacked and flagged a path through the forest and adjacent NW Florida Water Management land. Today two men from the Forest Service are visiting. The "choke point" is Cypress Creek that often floods. Here Tom Daniel shows the flags. Ron Rich points out a possible creek crossing to the east. In the background, JP tests the slippery wood on the old logging road across the creek.

Flagging/GPS Cypress Creek Bridge on 2010-12-02

Up the trail to flag it, back down to create a GPS track, FTA volunteers cross Cypress Creek on slippery logs. December 2, 2010.

Measuring for Cypress Creek Bridge on 2011-5-13

Measuring where and how long a bridge would need to be to cross Cypress Creek on the proposed Choctawhatchee River Section of the Florida Trail on May 13, 2011. Assisted by Tim Crews, Ron Rich flags and makes a GPS track between four points. They are each creek bank and each end of the bridge meeting the proposed trail. The total footage would be 184 feet. In 2016, the bridge was built farther east.

This view of the Florida National Scenic Trail is from NW Florida, the panhandle. Specifically the trail section will stretch from SR 81 at Seven Runs to SR 20 west of the Choctawhatchee River. See this Google map. Note there will be YouTube versions when I finish the videos. These are subject to change.
