• Caution: Handle with care!! This CD was burned manually. Home-burned CDs are more fragile than commercial CDs. Do not touch optical surface. Keep cool and dry and clean.

  • --produced by Wholeo CD and Wholeo Books/Online. The sole proprietor is Caroling (Carol Geary, Leo's mother), who is responsible for the CD and its contents.

    In Christchurch, New Zealand, December, 1996, Blair Macdonald said he would love to have all Leo's slides. I promised to send him a CD. It has taken a year and a half. Blair didn't know Leo when the slides were taken. That was from 1987 to 1990. From 1990 to 1992, Leo's pictures were probably print film that is lost.

    Generally, the idea behind the CD is to let as many people as possible enjoy Leo's work. Few people explore the wilds with his particular flair. He recorded the images. Now it is up to me to publish and you to spread them far and wide. Publishing is part of making his life count.

    • problems, sequence --When I got the slides, I tried to maintain the box order. When I scanned some of the slides, I numbered them that way. However, in 1995 I decided to return the slides to their original order, to piece together the story behind them. Gradually, as I've become more familiar with the slides, I've improved the ordering. There are still mistakes between boxes 5, 6, and 7. The sequence at Mt. Cook in 1988-89 is broken.
      
    • issues, viewing--You can view the web site (see below) in any browser. When you view the slides (see below) in a browser, Quicktime 3 plug-in is required. It cannot display the whole file because the window doesn't have scroll bars. So it is good for browsing, but you need to use a graphics program or picture viewer to see the whole picture.

      • index.htm is the introduction. Open it in a web browser to link to the other web pages.
      • images directory contains graphics for the CD top-level web pages.
      • lostNfoundObjects directory contains some miscellaneous Leo-related memorabilia. Fabric that he gave me. His compass and comb. A pot that Denise Quinlan gave me. A candle stand Leo made and a scarf that he wove in grade school. A scarf that Robyn Macdonald gave me.
      • Mac directory contains applications and miscellaneous files. My PICT art work files don't really belong here, but there's room on the CD, so here they be. The main applications are Netscape Communicator 4.05 (for browsing the web pages) and QuickTime 3 for the plug-in for opening BMP files from the browser. The QuickTime MoviePlayer is for the one .mov movie. The QuickTime PictureViewer is a great way to preview BMP files. You might need Disk Copy to open the compressed file images. The AppleCD Audio Player and Acrobat Reader 3.01 Installer probably won't be needed.
      • MedicineWheel directory contains files that support the web files of the same name. b96a1NA.mov is an animation of Leo's Last Flight over the White Mountains. The images subdirectory contains TIFF and PICT files that don't belong here either. From Windows you can view the PICT files in QuickTime PictureViewer. I'm not sure if Photoshop opens Mac TIFFs on the PC.
      • NZ is the main directory, containing files from 11 boxes of slides by Leo (0-10).
      • NZbyBox contains shortcuts (links called alias on the Mac) divided into 11 directories for the boxes of slides in NZ. This is a convenient way to browse the files. For example, the QuickTime PictureViewer works better with fewer files.
      • reading directory contains this file index.htm and the Readme.txt, which are web and text versions of start up info. Also LEOSLIDz1+.htm is a web file list of all the BMP photos in NZ. It has descriptions and cross-references to earlier numbering systems. See details below.
      • US directory contains two pictures by Leo and four taken of him in 1987. leoNjohn is Leo and John Jolly and the Grand Teton. lgUSfavorite is also of the Grand Teton. Shasta has two JPEG files I took of Mt. Shasta and Gray Butte at Panther Meadow, a grave for some of Leo's ashes; buried there in June, 1993. This was the first mountain Leo climbed, in 1975, at age 14.
      • Web is the Wholeo Online web site for Leo. See details below.
      • Windows directory contains the QuickTime 3 installer for Windows 95 or NT, which is self-opening. The filename is hLtXYZf39ts.exe. The QuickTime 3 plug-in opens BMP files from the browser. The QuickTime MoviePlayer is for the one .mov movie. If you have Windows 3.1, don't install QT 3. I was unable to test this CD on Windows 3.1. Most files should be viewable. You can use the MsPaint program for BMP files and any browser for the web pages.

    Used a Macintosh II and Power PC with a Microtek 1850s slide scanner. Tested CD on a 486 and Pentium PC.

    After scanning, the files are rough. Often there are black borders, dust, and colors to correct. I've worked on some of the files. Others I leave to you. If you edit the files, please add the notice "Edited by me, date" For example, "Edited by Thelma Nun, 2001". If you publish the photo, always include this notice: "© copyright 1988 Leo Geary, used with permission of Carol Geary". Fair enough? It would be great if you'd let me know and show me what you did, but is not required, as long is it is not-for-profit. Any viewing is fine. Leo shares! If there is profit from using the photos, Leo's estate should share that too. Please contact me for conditions, which are reasonable.

  (Web/Caroling/leo/Leo.htm) This is a snapshot of Leo-related pages at Wholeo Online as of June 7, 1998. View with the Web browser of your choice. NN 4.05 on Mac or PC is tested. This is a subset of the slide scans, with smaller files sizes in JPEG and GIF format. If you need help viewing the web pages, let me know.
• slide scans -- see Slide list
  (reading/LEOSLIDz1+.htm) These are all the slides of Leo's scanned to June 7, 1998. I converted them to 24-bit .BMP format for cross-platform use. This list lets you view the files in your Web browser. The files are 1-2 MB in size.

  Photoshop or most graphics programs are good for opening the files. On Windows, the system paint program can open BMP files. On the Macintosh, Simpletext can convert BMP files to the native format PICT. That might be useful for use in other programs. The new QuickTime 3 PictureViewer is a great browser because it shows a large preview of each picture in the file open dialog box as you scroll through the pictures.

• estate, what is left to do
  Carol Geary is the sole trustee of the Leo Geary estate. Leo started recording his adventures in the late 1970s, from Junior College on. He left slides from California, marine biology trips, cross-country USA, Costa Rica, Peru, and Utah. These will be published as time, energy, and resources permit. His legacy is enriched with Leo's Macintosh computer commercial graphics and Carol's ongoing contact with Leo's friends and energy traces. There is a lot more to do.
