earthball with broken tops

Lakewood 2011

On January 2, 2011 I found a new large earthball with broken petals (see above). That is, all the tips of the split-open top were broken or scattered across the gound. The large earthballs found on December 12 were there. One had opened up and the other slightly crushed. The small puffball clusters I've been watching since October 17, 2010 remain.

Across 30-A to the east of Lakewood, at the junction with WaterSound, I was surprised and delighted to find several earth-colored earth fungi. Here are a couple. The left earthball is completely opened, spores spent. The right earthstar's puffball is ready for action. On January 9 all these fungi were washed away with drainage from the storm on the bike path.
