I learned recently that when wet, deer lichen not only softens, but it deepens in color, turning towards emerald or aqua spa. This lichen tentatively identified as Cladonia evansii is on a path going north from Scenic Highway 30A towards Pt. Washington State Forest. I looked at Cladonia prostrata about 300 feet farther north on the path and it had not gotten wet in the rain.
