How to burn a hybrid Mac/ISO CD Jun 12, 1998, modified Jun 27 (added new QT 3 installers as I am now licensed by Apple to distribute) This is what I did for Wholeo CD 1. For details see readmeCD1ssu.txt (backed up on SeedyZ and FlybyZ (until oct98 and then Gatez?) Disc contents are large graphic files saved as BMP 24-bit format, 1-2 MB size, some .mov files (QT 2, flattened), the rest Web HTML, JPEG, GIF. A Mac directory with QT3, QT2, NN4, Disk Copy, Acrobat and Apple CD player (probably not used). A Windows directory with QT3. ~ 580 MB total. Hardware setup: Mac is 604e 200MHz Mac clone with 32 MB RAM. oly is Olympus Power MO 2600 with optical disks, 1.3 GB per side. saf is Safe and Friendly CD-RW drive, 2x2x4 (lowest kind). Modem is Global Village 33. Keyboard, wacom graphics tablet, and trackball all connected. Reading and modifying readmeHow2CD1.txt on separate computer Procedure: ¥ Shortened SCSI Cables. Mac to oly 2', oly to saf 2', saf terminated. ¥ Left modem connected but turned off. ¥ Use Appearance Manager to do this now on OS 9. Previous: Using the VIEWS control panel, reset the font to the default setting of Ò9 pt GenevaÓ ¥ Saved everything to be on the CD to an oly disc named "Leo_Geary", the name of the CD to be. Removed everything else from the oly disc. Otherwise have to do temporary partition, which is time-consuming. Removed custom icons from folders (Toast complained). ¥ Optimized the oly disc using Norton's Speed Disk. (this takes 30 minutes mostly to check media) ¥ Opened Apple menu/Control Panels/Extensions Manager (System 7.6.1) and saved current settings in a file. ¥ Created a new control panel/extension set called "CD-RW subset worked", see separate file. (what is CD-RW subset edited? earlier!) {5/12/03 using CD-Toast4noOpenT+} (8/4/99 reedited it from memory on new HD, Bened. Now adding Apple CD and foreign file access so I can boot system 7/6/1 from backup disk. Toast won't run on 8/5, looking for Desktop EF) ¥ Restart computer with all drives powered on. ¥ Start toast (Adaptek Toast. some instructions are from the pdf manual:) --for CD-RW, Recorder menu: Disk info: Erase: Quick erase (takes several minutes to wipe the writable CD I'm using for development and archive of this Wholeo CD 1 project). The disk icon is now gone until the CD is successfully rewritten. Also Mac is tied up for the duration of the erase. No cancel. Don't need this step with regular CD-R disc. {11/98 can open Leo_Geary/Leo_Geary CD2 and all setup is done, go right to Write CD} --a Choose Mac/ISO Hybrid from the Format menu. 4-34 b Click MacÉ.Now is Data...doesn't work with a folder just drop in the window c Highlight the volume of your choice in the upper part of the window. (This is called the "Macintosh volume" below. Just the oly disk with the source files for me.) Check Optimize to avoid problems relating to sector sizes and to make the disc as responsive as possible. Click OK. (Note: by default, only "Don't copy free space" is checked. And Optimize is popup "for Speed") The size of the selected data is displayed in the main window. Mine said "Mac: 556.4/1243" (The second number is size of oly disk, no problem. with new QT3 installers is now 577.9/1243.2, with archive in Mac is 636.9/1243.2. 11/18/98 660.3/1243.2) 4 Selecting the exclusive ISO Data To select the exclusive ISO data for the Hybrid disc: a Click ISOÉ. 4-35 An empty selection window is displayed: I didn't do anything "exclusive" 5 Selecting the Shared Data a Now drag any shared data from the Macintosh volume selected in step ÒCÓ to the desired location in the ISO file structure or click AddÉ to select them. (This is the step that I couldn't master using a temporary partition. I drag the source disk icon and drop on the selection window) I didn't see any different colors. I highlighted the "Mac" folder and clicked "Remove". 6 Settings 4-36 Toast UserÕs Guide a Click the Settings tab. The following window is displayed: Ð Choose CD-ROM. b Choose a Naming option for files and folders. Pick "Joliet (MS DOS and Windows 95)" from the pick list. Uncheck "Use Macintosh Extensions" 7 Writing a Disc a When you have selected all the data and chosen the correct settings, click Done. The selected data is displayed in the main window: Mine said "ISO: 248K + 907.2 MB shared Data CD-ROM 63:24:69" Actually, with Joliet and no Apple file extensions, changed to this: "404 K + 896.6 MB shared data CD-ROM Total 63:25:10" With new QT 3a installers "ISO: 412K +901 MB, 65:51:51" I think the last number varied somewhat. Don't know meaning. I guess the 907 or 896 is the oly disk data and empty space (?) but it worked anyway. With archive in Mac folder 380K + 901 MB, 72:34:43 Note: Toast allows you to save your setup so you can use it later. Simply choose the Save as command from the File menu. I didn't trust this, as opening the saved setup failed, when the first disk I wrote had worked. I start from scratch. b Click Check SpeedÉ. Toast reads all the selected data to determine if your system is fast enough to write the disc in the chosen speed. When the test is completed, click Done. The disk cache of 1 MB was totally filled, the 16 MB RAM cache went over the arrow level, but not to the top of the indicator box. I didn't repeat this after the first time, using the same data (or even the last whole session). It took over 30 minutes. 4-37 c Insert a recordable CD in your writer, if you haven't already. d Click Write CDÉ. e Verify that the desired writing speed is selected in the pop-up menu. (such as 2x? I didn't change anything.) f Click Write Disc (writing a session is not recommended for Hybrid discs). A dialog box appears saying, Start writing now? Maybe only if skip the check Speed step b. 2x speed and no other boxes checked. The writing process begins at the selected speed. Wholeo CD 1 takes about 37 minutes. When all the data is written, Toast pauses for you to eject the disk if you want, then times out and automatically verifies the data. I verified each time. Whole thing takes about an hour. Then disk is ejected. It is named Leo_Geary on Mac, Leo_geary on Windows, with a blank donut icon. I will try customizing the icon sometime. Right now I'm more burned out than the burned CD! ¥ In Apple menu/Control panel/Extensions Manager, choose the settings you saved before CD burning madness. Restart computer and test the new disk. Notes: Contrary to the impression from the Toast manual, I didn't need a temporary partition. The Mac got everything. No problem. The Mac has no problem with Windows files. In fact they might be useful there. I removed the Mac folder from the ISO load. It didn't show up on the PC, but it did on the Mac. Main problem I'm having now is that QuickTime 3 on the PC won't work. Locks up when 1/2 the QuickTime pro splash screen loads, even after I trashed the file from the desktop. Even NN3 with it's old QT 1.1 plug-in is now broken. I can't test QT from a browser on the PC. However an old Movie-Player was able to view the panos and movie OK. PC is Pentium 133 MHz clone with 16 MB RAM. Jun 27. Do I have to reoptimize Oly because I changed the QT 3 installers? I decided to. Also, going into new territory, burning a real CD-R disc, hopefully. Keeping and updating readmeCD1 file with names and addresses of recipients of the disk. feb 22 2000 added qt4 installer and redid some files. Did not reoptimize seedy. CD-RW not visible as promised in the DV-RAM drive! also got two errors about filenames in and an icon in cat. but went ahead anyway. Mar 18 2001 redid cds/Leo_Geary and Seedy to reburn master CD and one for NZ.
